The Hope Project
The Hope Project is a pilot program designed to provide veterans and civilians with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and their families with a comprehensive, community-integrated cirriculum to increase independence and self-sufficiency. By creating a learning community, the program will support an individual's transition from post acute rehabilitation to long-term community living. Through a series of six modules, taught at Virginia Tech, Northern Virginia Center, individuals partake in classes to learn about lifespan issues related to the long term needs of individuals with TBI and their families. Topics include self care and self reliance, compensatory strategy development, daily routine development, health, meaningful nutrition and leisure education, productive focus, support team development, and practicum and mentoring opportunities. Program Goal To increase individual's independence and self-sufficiency by creating a learning community that supports an individual's transition from post acute rehabilitation to long-term community living. Participant Selection Criteria Virginia resident, medically stable, not of harm to self or others, documented primary diagnosis of TBI, willingness and ability to participate in the program, with preference given to military service members with TBI returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.
